Obituary for Lenard Douglas List

On Saturday December 2nd, 2023, Lenard Douglas List, loving husband, father to two sons and grandfather to two granddaughters passed away at age 68 at home with family by his side.

Lenard was born in Yankton, South Dakota in December 1954, to Wayne and Charlotte List. He lived in South Dakota until the age of 10 when his family moved to California. He attended Stagg High School and graduated in 1973. Shortly after graduating high school Lenard moved to Kansas for a brief period where he learned the trade of truck driving; he took this skill and made a 40-year long career out of it driving for Panella, Cargill, Smart Transportation and retiring with Silva Trucking in 2021. After returning to California in 1974, he rekindled a relationship with Susan Elias, whom he had known since childhood. This relationship flourished over the years and they were married in February 1982. In 1983, they welcomed their first son Joseph and in 1985 they had their second son Nicholas.

After retirement Lenard took this opportunity to do some traveling with his wife to Lake Tahoe, Monterey, Hawaii, and Fort Bragg just to name a few. Despite driving for a living, he loved to jump in the car with his wife and just go, with no destination in mind, they would spend the day sightseeing, chatting, and enjoying each other’s company. When he wanted to take a break from traveling and relax at home, he really enjoyed watching Pawn Stars and American Pickers.

In Lenard’s early family life most of his spare time was spent with his wife and two sons. They spent many weekends and summers at Big Trees, Pinecrest, and Woodward where they also camped with Lenard’s parents (Wayne and Jean List), his in-laws, siblings, and their children. Both Lenard and his wife have large families so they were always celebrating birthdays, holidays, weddings, and anniversaries together. He took pride in keeping a well-manicured yard as well as doing DIY projects with his sons and wife. Lenard was great at woodworking and enjoyed creating pieces for his family, they included a China hutch that is still in the family as well as beautifully crafted smaller hutch and two end tables to match.

Lenard is survived by his wife Susan List (Elias) of 42 years, his two sons Joseph (Marissa), Nicholas (Michelle), and two granddaughters Hailey and Emily. He is also survived by his mother (Jean List), and siblings Janet Walker, Daryl List (Tracy), and Sandra Rabanal (Jeffrey), along with many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday December 15th at St. Lukes Catholic Church at 2:00pm with a reception to immediately follow in the church’s social hall.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you please make a donation to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital as it was Lenard’s favorite charity to support.
