Obituary for Erna Denise Shields

Erna Denise Shields departed life on earth to be with her Lord on Wednesday, January 18th, 2024, surrounded by love.

Erna was a bright spark among those who knew her. Born in Ford Ord, Monterey on May 16 1952, Erna was raised in Seaside, CA, Fairhope, AL, and Cedartown, GA. At 18, she enlisted in the US Army and served 3 years in the Army and several years in the Air Force Reserves.

In 1976, she married James Edward Shields and they had a daughter, Alexsis Dianna Shields. She spent most of her life in San Jose and loved cooking, laughing with Alexsis, and spending time with her friends and pets.

She is survived by her daughter, nephews Arnold Caver, Jermaine McClain, Justin McClain and Omuri Ranson. She is a great aunt to Justice, Damien, Aaliyah, Adriana, Jericho, and Enzo. Erna also leaves behind her bonus sisters, longtime dear friends LeeAnna Doss, Tulei Logotaeao, Bevery Ann Taylor, Damita Collins, and Marion Malone.

Erna is preceded in life by her parents Mable Williams and Eugene Caver; brother, Arnold Caver; cousin Lamar Calloway; aunt Thema Scott and grandmother Georgia Woods.

My Mother was a beautiful, intelligent, hilarious, and caring woman and I will miss her every day. She impacted so many lives, and will be deeply missed, but her spark will live on through our love. Keep your eyes peeled, she loves a good prank!
