Fleeta Mae Stokes was born August 29, 1931 in Groom, Texas. Her parents were Archie Lawson Sanders and Violet Zetta Gaston Sanders. She departed this life at age 87 yrs to start a new journey with our Heavenly Father on September 19, 2018. Fleeta was the 7th child of eight children Her two oldest brothers Kenneth Albert and Merkle Woodrum died in early childhood. Her siblings were Geralene Earnestine Sanders, Cleota Carroll Sanders Massey (Tommy), Alberteen Koeta Sanders Pribyla (Gene), Archie Lawson Sanders (A.L.), (Jean), Elouise Marie Sanders Schneider (Regis Joseph).
Fleeta came to live in Stockton, California in 1945 where she attended Victory Elementary and Stockton Jr High School. She married George Gay Stokes on March 23, 1949. She was married to George for 54 plus years until his death on August 12, 2003. George and Fleeta had one daughter, Cassie Gay Stokes who was born on February 20, 1954 while they were living in Alma, Georgia. Due to the nature of her husband's work, she had the opportunity to live in 27 different states in 15 years before returning to Stockton, California in 1964.
On November 4, 1971 their family began to expand when Cassie married Harold Allen followed by the birth of their 1st grandchild, ShaNee Lee Allen on September 14, 1973. Fleeta then became Grammee and ShaNee quickly became the apple of her eye. Fleeta was always a baby girl lover until she got a grandson, Joshua Jon Allen born March 14, 1985. This grandson sweetened her heart over time too, and the spit fire called Grammee became very fond of and fell in love with this rough and tumble boy.
Life continued after retirement where Fleeta and George went to Arizona to enjoy life, exploring the desert on 4 wheelers for 9 months out of the year. Then her family expanded again when ShaNee married her husband Christian Mifsud on June 12, 1999. A couple of years later she again got another baby girl when her great granddaughter Anastasia ChrisNee Mifsud was born on February 25, 2002. She ws over the moon with this arrival, soon followed by a great grandson Rocco Alexzander John Mifsud on December 22, 2005. This was her final baby to love and dote on and did she ever enjoy him.
Fleeta was a victim of dementia the last few years of her life...She did so courageously even to the end. She was a fighter, never ever did she even began to know the word I cannot. Even when she couldn't, she would try again and again. After her major heart surgery in 2005, she was given no more than 5 years. Well she did it her way and lasted 15 years and saw her great grandkids go to high school and Jr high.
There are so many people to thank for helping Fleeta in these past years, first a special thank you to Zosing Care Home. Especially to Josie, Beth and Angelica. These people were kind, patient and loving to Fleeta when at times it was hard to do so...Vitas Hospice staff were beyond kind, always going and doing the little extra that did not go unnoticed by family and friends. Chaplain Dave Hall, thank you for your spiritual support, your amazing. And finally to Fleeta's beloved Dr. Shaukat Shah, what support and devotion this wonderful man provided Fleeta over 30 years. Making sure her care was perfect until the very end. She never did stop smoking Dr. Shah and believed you couldn't tell and would make sure and lead you away from conversation that might provide any clue to you asking about her secret habit...LOL.
Fleeta leaves behind a family that will always love and remember her spunk and vigor. Who will have amazing memories and pass along Grammee stories for generations to come...Fly High with the Maker of the Stars Mom, Where you are Free, Happy and Healthy and Loved...
